Scar therapy

C-section and abdominal scar physiotherapy

At Active Lives Physiotherapy we recognise that there is little information or support given to people after a a c-section or abdominal surgery about how to care for their scar and aid healing, or about returning to exercise.  We are here to give you the tools to help with the optimum healing of your scar and also to provide treatment in the form of manual scar therapy and LymphaTouch.

Scars take 2 years to fully mature and therefore seeking assessment and treatment any time within the first two years of your operation can help with scar healing.  Although it is best to start treatment as early as possible even beyond the two year  time frame changes can be made to scar and its surrounding tissue with scar therapy.

Scar therapy can help with these issues which are commonly felt or seen post c-section or abdominal surgery:

  • changes in sensitivity
  • redness
  • pain
  • discomfort
  • pulling
  • thickening
  • swelling
  • tethering
  • an overhang
  • hypertrophic or keloid scar

When you book in for a scar assessment it will include some or all of these elements:

  • A thorough history taking and discussion about your operation and scar
  • Postural assessment
  • Spinal movement and functional movement assessment
  • Scar Assessment
  • Diastasis check  (for abdominal separation)
  • Advice and teaching manual Scar massage techniques
  • Manual scar massage and LymphaTouch ( where applicable and time allowing)
  • Advice about C-Section and scar massage products
  • Advice about returning to activity and exercise
  • Abdominal muscle activation and core rehab
  • Scar rehab plan

Follow up appointments will include manual scar massage and where indicated, LymphaTouch treatment, myofascial release or soft tissues techniques, core rehab progression and other applicable assessment or treatment.

What is LymphaTouch and how does it benefit scar healing?

LymphaTouch use negative pressure and mechanical vibration to soften fibrotic and scar tissue adhesions, improving tissue elasticity and flexibility. It also promotes oxygenation and lymphatic drainage of the treated area, which can contribute to wound healing and prevent adhesions. It can be used to treat newer and older scars.

LymphaTouch benefits :

  • mobilise tissue and fascial connections
  • increases blood flow and lymph flow
  • softens the scar
  • reduces tethering and can therefore aid appearance and comfort
  • helps reduce the overhang
  • improves sensation around and on the scar
  • enhances the healing process leading to quicker results
